Resumen de El mar en el Cantar de Mio Cid

Siguiendo el camino trazado por los estudios dedicados a los ríos del Cantar de Mio Cid, este artículo intenta ir un poco más allá, ahondando en la presencia y función del mar en el poema. Frente al caso de los ríos, donde funcionan como frontera física, el mar no es sólo un espacio geográfico, sino también mental, en cuanto que posee un enorme valor, tanto simbólico como psicológico, que es necesario comprender a la hora de aprehender el sentido profundo de cada referencia al mar que aparece en el Cantar. Todo ello contribuirá no ya a descifrar el sentido del este crucial símbolo sino, también, a ofrecer una perspectiva del concepto medieval del mar.

Following the path traced by the researches devoted to the rivers of the Cantar de Mio Cid, this article attempts to go a step beyond by delving into the presence and functions of the sea in the poem. In contrast with the rivers, which appear as a physical frontier, the sea is not only a geographic but a mental place, as it has an important symbolic and psychological value which is necessary to understand in order to fully comprehend the meaning of the sea in every single reference to it in the Cantar. On the whole, this article will not only decypher the meaning of this crucial symbol but also offer a perspective of the medieval concept of the sea.
