The following article analyzes Runaway Bride as the evolution of Julia Roberts’ romantic comedy roles as they develop through Pretty Woman and My Best Friend’s Wedding to determine to what extent women’s roles in romantic comedy have changed in the 90s. These three films have been chosen because of their adherence to the conventions of romantic comedy and also because Runaway Bride and My Best Friend’s Wedding deal directly with the concerns of the decade about marriage and the rituals of courtship in our times.
