Resumen de Panorama desde el Puente (de Gálatea), o las encrucijadas del cine turco

Alberto Elena Díaz

  • This paper addresses major changes in Turkish cinematography in the last two decades. The prolific Turkish film industry of the nineteen seventies suffered a crisis in the eighties which then led to its near complete disappearance in the nineties. Also dying out in the course of these years was censorship. A result of this situation is the rise of a new cinema which may be considered independent and which is primarily concerned with the question of Turkish identity as it had been laid out in preceding decades. This article analyses the subject- matter of these new films: the question of Turkish identity, criticism of the political class, national and international emigration, religious identity, ethnic minorities, historical themes and the ever-present “Kurd problem”.
