This article analyses the current crisis in the Middle East in the aftermath of economic collapse and the disintegration of social models set up by the first postcolonial generation in the region. Directly affected by this situation, films produced in the area are caught in the midst of a conflict of conservative and modern ideals. It is thus difficult for them to reflect the complicated reality of current events without being subjected to censorship or becoming instruments of propaganda. Worthy of special attention within this state of affairs are Palestinian and Israeli films. The clash between Palestinian and Israeli societies, together with the internal fragmentation to be found in each makes for a type of cinema in which representation of “the other” and self-determination are key factors.
