    Aquesta comunicació es proposa d’analitzar l’aparició de la primera novel·la de Llorenç Villalonga, Mort de dama (1931) i, en concret, la seva dimensió més satírica, irònica i burlesca. Villalonga, que aleshores constituïa un dels elements més conspicus de l’anticatalanisme mallorquí, la va escriure en català, i això ja pot ser considerat una primera mostra de la seva ironia. En cap altra llengua hauria fet sentit una crítica als dos sectors que, amb més força, pretenia burlar, l’Escola Mallorquina i l’aristocràcia illenca, que sempre s’expressaven en llengua vernacla. Però la causticitat villalonguiana arribarà molt més enllà, fins al punt que en veure la llum la novel·la causà un escàndol.

    This paper intends to analyse the publication of the first Villalonga’s novel, Mort de dama (1931) and its aspects more satirical, ironic and humorous. Villalonga was by then one of the most eminent anti-Catalan Majorcan writers and, because of this, he wrote it in Catalan, and this may be considered one of the first samples of his irony. In any other language can be understood a criticism to the two sectors that Villalonga tried to mock in his text, Majorcan School and the aristocrats, that always used their own language. But Villalonga’s causticity goes further in the sense that the novel caused an authentic outrage when it saw the light.
