    The paper deals with the linguistic choice that Joan Fuster made between Catalan and Spanish in his beginnings in poetry. We keep to the collaborations in which he became well known as a poet in Valencian press, between 1945 and 1949, especially in the poems published in the almanac of the newspaper Las Provincias and the magazines Verbo, Esclat and Víspera. The fixed time period is due to the fact that in 1945 he made his debut in the almanac of Las Provincias, and the fact that in 1949 he published the last poem in Verbo. Although he continued publishing poems in Catalan magazines (Ariel), from the exile (La Nostra Revista) and Valencian newspapers (Levante), he did it occasionally. That’s why we are focusing on in the times and publications mentioned before. Next we are arguing that Catalan was, since the beginning, the language chosen by Joan Fuster for his poetic creation. To prove it we use, mainly, the unpublished letters with the writer José Albi –one of his best friends from his youth age and, at the same time, editor of the literary magazine Verbo– and with the poet and linguist Carles Salvador, as well as the poems published in the publications mentioned before. And finally, we add the existence of two poems by Fuster (both unpublished and in Catalan) written along these years and some versions (unpublished and in Catalan as well) of poems in Spanish published in Verbo under Albi orders. With this material, we support the theory that the predominant language in Fuster’s beginnings as a poet was Catalan.

    Aquest article versa sobre la tria lingüística que efectuà Joan Fuster, entre el català i el castellà, en els seus inicis poètics. Ens cenyim a les col·laboracions en què es donà a conéixer com a poeta en la premsa escrita valenciana, entre 1945 i 1949, en concret als poemes publicats en l’almanac del diari Las Provincias i a les revistes Verbo, Esclat i Víspera. El període temporal fixat obeeix al fet que el 1945 es produí el seu debut poètic a l’almanac de Las Provincias, i que, el 1949, publicà l’últim poema en Verbo. Tot i que seguí publicant poemes posteriorment en revistes catalanes (Ariel), de l’exili (La Nostra Revista) i diaris valencians (Levante), ho va fer de manera esparsa. Per aquest motiu, ens centrem en els anys i les publicacions abans esmentades. Tot seguit argumentem que el català fou, des del principi, la llengua escollida per Joan Fuster per a la creació poètica. Per a demostrar-ho ens valem, principalment, de les correspondències (inèdites) mantingudes amb l’escriptor José Albi –un dels seus amics íntims de joventut i alhora director de la revista literària Verbo– i amb el poeta i lingüista Carles Salvador, així com dels poemes apareguts en les publicacions citades. En última instància, aportem l’existència de dos poemes de Fuster (inèdits i en català) escrits en aquests anys, i algunes versions (també inèdites i en català) de poemes que publicà en castellà en Verbo per imperatiu d’Albi. Amb aquest material, mantenim la tesi que la llengua predominant en els inicis poètics de Fuster fou el català.
