    Solitud has always been an endless source of analysis for scholars who wanted to interpret it in a symbolic and psychological way, often relying on the framework of rural modernist novel. Furthermore, since the 80-90’s gender studies have even opened new critical approaches. It seems, therefore, that the novel responds positively to all these efforts and continues evading them at the same time, always offering new alternatives. Without dismissing any previous readings, my intention is to apply a different light on the text: to carefully analyse everything it shares with Gothic, fantastic and terror literature, such as the theme of the double, the presence of ghosts, the supernatural ambivalence, the medieval and decadent scenario, or nature as a powerful and hostile force that attacks individuals.

    Solitud ha estat sempre una font inesgotable d’anàlisi per als estudiosos que volien trobar-hi lectures simbòliques i psicològiques, emparant-se habitualment en el marc de la novel·la modernista rural. I a més, d’ençà del segle XX la crítica que treballa des dels estudis de gènere hi ha obert encara noves vies d’accés. Fa l’efecte, doncs, que la novel·la respon favorablement a tots aquests intents i no cessa de fugir-ne alhora, oferint sempre noves alternatives. Sense desestimar cap de les lectures prèvies, la meva intenció és aplicar al text una llum diferent: analitzar amb deteniment tot allò que comparteix amb la literatura gòtica, fantàstica i de terror, com per exemple el tema recurrent del doble, la presència d’espectres, l’ambigüitat del sobrenatural, el decorat medieval i decadent, o la naturalesa com una força hostil que agredeix els individus.
