Este ensayo es una revisión y una reflexión de la historia de las diversas reglas, normas, acuerdos y leyes que se han emitido de manera oficial desde el siglo XVIII en México para salvaguardar lo que en cada momento histórico se ha considerado valioso y digno de ser preservado. Es, por tanto, también la historia del concepto de patrimonio en nuestro país y muy especialmente del valor que se ha concedido al legado virreinal.

This essay is a review of and a reflection upon the history of rules, regulations, agreements and laws officially issued in Mexico since the 18th century, aimed at safeguarding the heritage considered valuable and worthy of preservation in various historical periods. Therefore, it is also the history of the concept of heritage in our country, in particular of the value granted to our colonial legacy. The essay is divided into five sections: the history of the Illustration; from the Independence War to the Reformation of the State, the period of Porfirio Díaz, Post-Revolutionary legislation, and present day Mexico.
