The text outlines the importance of promoting the adaptive re-use of built heritage, not only as a historical architectural tradition but also as a growing sustainable design practice, in response to cultural and environmental damage due to human factors. The conventional set of values justifying the protection of existing buildings must be enlarged beyond the ‘monumental’ vision which has defined heritage conservation. Adaptive reuse projects face the double challenge of preserving the architectural sources which support the memory and significance of places, while creating contemporary spaces adapted to current social needs.
