Between heaven and earth: Divine mediation among the T'ai. -- What changes has the conversion to Buddhism of peoples belonging to the T'ai language group brought about in cosmology and messianic conceptions and, too, in the religious observances and beliefs associated with land divinities? The sky, toward which most religious practices were turned before Indianization, has yielded importance in the Buddhist context to the earth and underworld. Interestingly, this analysis sheds light on the fusion, substitution and reciprocal adaptation between certain pre-Buddhist entities and other entities introduced locally by Buddhism.

L'auteur examine les changements que la conversion au bouddhisme d'une partie des peuples de langue t'aï a suscités, tant au niveau de leur cosmologie et de leurs conceptions sotériologiques, qu'à celui plus particulier des cultes rendus aux divinités du sol et des croyances correspondantes. Il montre notamment que le ciel, vers lequel étaient orientées la plupart des pratiques religieuses d'avant l'indianisation, a perdu de son importance en contexte bouddhique au profit de la terre et du monde souterrain. L'analyse fait ressortir d'intéressants phénomènes de fusion, de substitution, ou d'adaptation réciproque entre certaines entités prébouddhiques et d'autres que la religion de l'Illuminé a introduites localement.
