PURPOSE: A non-interventional study to evaluate outcomes in cataract and refractive lens exchange patients implanted with a refractive multifocal IOL (MIOL) in one eye and a diffractive MIOL in the fellow eye.
METHODS: The registry involved 12 centers that began to enroll patients in June 2006.
A total of 226 patients underwent surgery in the registry with 179 completing the 6-month follow-up. All patients were implanted with a refractive MIOL (ReZoom, Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA) in one eye (dominant eye recommended) and a diffractive MIOL in the second eye (Tecnis MF IOL, AMO, Santa Ana, CA).
RESULTS: The primary endpoints measured were uncorrected near, intermediate and distance vision and best-corrected distance vision, reading speed and reading acuity, as well as independence from glasses and any photic phenomena. At the 1-month visit, the mean uncorrected distance vision was 0.93 (SD 0.21), and 0.97 (SD 0.97) at the 6-month visit.
The mean uncorrected intermediate vision was 0.61 (SD 0.22) and 0.58 (SD 0.21), respectively, at the same visits. The mean uncorrected near vision was 0.83 (SD 0.25) and 0.85 (0.26). The mean best-corrected distance vision was 1.02 (SD 0.22) and 1.05 (SD 0.23) at the same intervals.
CONCLUSIONS: The combination of a refractive MIOL and a diffractive MIOL provides good uncorrected visual results at near, intermediate and far distances, with a high degree of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.
