Mozarabs and Medical Knowledge in al-Andalus between VIIIth and Xth centuries Muslims came to the Iberian Peninsula in 711.
The earliest known works of Arab medicine produced in al- Andalus are only from the Xth century. Since there was always sick people and had to be doctors to treat them. What happened in the meantime? Between the VIIIth and the Xth centuries the medical knowledge in the Iberian Peninsula was what remained from the Greek and Roman medicine. No much medical treaties in the libraries and a short knowledge about plants and other substances. Christian doctors made a kind of bridge from the roman-gothic past to new times, and during the VIIIth century and the first half of IXth century, some Latin medical texts were translated to Arabic. All changed in the beginning of the Umayyad Caliphate in al-Andalus and with the translation of Dioscorides Book from the Greek to Arabic, and real start point of the Andalusian medicine.

Os muçulmanos chegaram à Península Ibérica em 711. Os primeiros trabalhos conhecidos da medicina árabe produzidos em al-Andalus surgiram só no século X. Desde sempre houve pessoas doentes e tiveram de haver médicos para tratá-los. O que aconteceu nesse meio tempo?Entre os séculos VIII e X o conhecimento médico na Península Ibérica foi o que permaneceu da medicina grega e romana. Não haviam muitos tratados médicos nas bibliotecas, e o conhecimento sobre as plantas e outras substâncias era também escasso.Os médicos cristãos fizeram uma espécie de ponte entre o passado romano-gótico e os novos tempos, e durante o século VIII e a primeira metade do século IX, alguns textos médicos latinos foram traduzidos para o árabe. Tudo mudou no início do Califado Omíada em al- Andalus, com a tradução do Livro de Dioscórides, do grego para o árabe e verdadeiro ponto de partida da medicina do al-Andalus.
