  • Resumen
    • Andries Veensma was a fascinating man, caring for dogs and their owners. As a young man he was politically active as a supporter of justice and equality. He was a leftist, but not without liberal principles. During his career as an animal caretaker at the Utrecht University Small Animal Clinic (1911-1932) he had several conflicts with his chief, professor H. Jakob, on terms of employment. In his position as animal caretaker he was photographed on many occasions together with his chief. These pictures have been reproduced in several books and papers, and also decorate the current Department of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals. They are appropriate mementos of someone who otherwise left behind very little. However, this does not hold true for his grandson (the author of the article) who followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and became a veterinarian. This article provides some insight into the labor relations of that era, 100 years ago
