    For a long time the general opinion was that “Elf Söhne” (‘Eleven sons’) concealed “literary mystifications” of Kafka’s texts. Against the backdrop of Kafka’s intensive reading of the Bible and in view of the religious topic in the stories of the volume “Ein Landarzt” (‘A Country Doctor’), it can be shown that the sons recall important figures from the Jewish tradition, which gives rise to a concerned reflection on the state of Judaism in the modern age and to a critical revision of the tradition in line with Kafka’s ‘New Judaism’.

    Hinter "Elf Söhne" verbärgen sich ‚literarische Mystifikationen‘ von Kafka-Texten, meinte man lange. Vor dem Hintergrund von Kafkas intensiver Bibellektüre und in Hinsicht auf das Religionsthema des "Landarzt"-Bandes lässt sich aber zeigen, dass die Söhne bedeutende Figuren der jüdischen Tradition aufrufen, die zum Anlass für eine sorgenvolle Reflexion über den Zustand des Judentums in der Moderne und für eine bilderkritische Revision der Überlieferung im Sinne von Kafkas ‚Neuem Judentum‘ werden.
