En el Perú, aparte de dos monografías sobre esta enfermedad, una del siglo XVIII , de Pablo Petit , y la otra del XIX, de José Manuel Valdés, no se ha hecho un estudio historiográfico sobre esta enfermedad, para precisar su antigüedad y la mortalidad que ocasiona. Preciso será recurrir a la eurística para encontrar huellas de su paso a través de las edades.
