Isabel Clara Eugenia y la espada de Balduino: soberanía femenina y estatuto conyugal

    Entre las facultades que le concedían las capitulaciones matrimoniales preparadas por el rey su padre para su boda con Alberto, y el uso que de dichas facultades hizo Isabel Clara Eugenia en vida de su marido, hay una distancia que plantea la cuestión de saber por qué una princesa dotada para el mando y facultada para ejercerlo decidió adoptar un segundo plano en beneficio del protagonismo oficial de su marido. Estas líneas, partiendo del análisis de las ceremonias de entrada en Gante en donde la infanta impone soberanamente la preeminencia de Alberto, no siempre bien aceptada por sus nuevos súbditos, entienden poder explicar la actitud de la infanta recurriendo al peso de su formación religiosa reforzada por la influencia de su confesor, para quien la jerarquía del imaginario religioso del matrimonio/sacramento había de tener prioridad sobre la jerarquía política que hacía de Isabel soberana por derecho propio. La actitud de Isabel Clara Eugenia, esposa ejemplar, podría aparecer como característica del cambio de orientación de la Monarquía Católica que, tras Felipe II, adopta una práctica de religiosidad radical, que trae consigo un implícito sometimiento ideológico y político a Roma.
