El sistema alemán de protección social de la dependencia tiene un interés comparatista muy grande, que ha llamado la atención incluso de la más reciente doctrina científica norteamericana. Se encuentra regulado en el Libro XI del Código alemán de Seguridad Social, que entró en vigor en 1995. Esta norma regula una contingencia de carácter contributivo, en la que las cotizaciones sociales se complementan con el copago. En él, el papel principal lo juegan las prestaciones en especie, eventualmente realizadas por los familiares del beneficiario, aunque tienda a favorecerse la atención por medio de cuidadores profesionales.
Al formar parte del sistema de seguridad social, la gestión del mismo está confiada a entes gestores específicos de la seguridad social alemana, garantizándose la sostenibilidad del sistema a través de un fondo especial, que no podrá utilizarse hasta el año 2035.

The German system for the social protection of long-term care has a great comparative interest, which has even cought the attention of the most recent American scientific literature. It is ruled in the XIth Book of the German Code of Social Security, in force since 1995. This norm rules a contingency with contributory character, in which social contributions are supplemented by beneficiary’s copayment. In it, the main role is played by in kind benefits, which can be eventually served by beneficiary’s relatives, although the system tends to encourage the care by means of professional caregivers. Being a part of the social security system, its management corresponds to specific bodies of the German social security, and its sustainability is guaranteed by a special fund, which cannot be activated until 2035.
