This paper describes the ethno-prehistorical thought of Giustiniano Nicolucci (1819-1904), one of the pioneers in the development of physical anthropology and prehistory in Italy. His theories about the Iberian-Ligurian people and other Italian ancient peoples are examined in the historical and political context of the Italian unification, officially proclaimed in 1861. The religious ideas that influenced the theorization of Nicolucci during all his life are also analyzed in this paper. A contextual approach to his etno-prehistorical thought can explain both the long success of some thesis of this scholar as well as the fall into oblivion of his name along the 20th century.
