Information technology (IT) is an integral part of the foodservice industry today. As a result, computer skills and a fundamental understanding of information technology are now basic requirements for foodservice professionals. This research investigates what competencies in foodservice information technology are expected by restaurateurs of graduates from four-year hospitality schools in the United States. The study used a modified Delphi technique to assess the opinions of a select group of foodservice operations managers. Information systems considered most important by respondents were those concerned with labor cost, point-of-sale, purchasing, cost of goods sold, and accounting/profitability. Additional research on the subject of IT and development of IT coursework for inclusion in ACPHA's accredited curriculum is recommended.
