The essay explores the importance of John Calhoun’s thought by trying firstly to contextualize his contribution from a historical and legal point of view. Secondly both the continuities and discontinuities existing between Calhoun and the other supporters of the compact theory will be stressed.
Finally, in the conclusions, the Author shall emphasize the topicality of some of his insights.

Il saggio si sofferma sull’importanza del pensiero di john Calhoun, cercando, in primo momento, di contestualizzare, da un punto di vista storico- giuridico, il suo contributo. Successivamente, si sottolineano continuità e discontinuità con la tradizione contrattualistica. Infine, nelle conclusioni, si tenta di evidenziare l’attualità di alcune delle sue intuizioni.
