The presence of foreign colonies in the Bajo Guadalquivir at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Early Modern period has been perfectly documented in different studies. Not only Seville, but also other cities such as Cádiz, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Jerez de la Frontera and El Puerto de Santa María showed large immigrant populations.
These were attracted by the demographic dynamism of the aformentioned locations, as well as by the importance of their agriculture and cattle raising and their trade prospects with America.
The analysis of the notarial documents in the archive of Jerez de la Frontera shows the strength of that immigration in El Puerto, particularly from Portugal and Genoa.
