L'engagement des ergothérapeutes à la pratique centrée sur le client et à la promotion de la participation aux occupations de la vie quotidienne ne se réflète pas universellement dans la pratique de l'ergothérapeute ou dans l'occupation de chercheur en ergothérapie. En général, les chercheurs de la profession ne se sont pas engagés face aux critiques ayant été formulées par des théoriciens du handicap en réaction à leurs travaux de recherche. But. Comme il n'existe pas de lignes directrices relatives à la recherche en ergothérapie centrée sur le client, le présent article s'appuie sur les travaux des théoriciens du handicap pour esquisser une méthodologie du handicap. Il s'agit d'une approche philosophique, politique et éthique spécifique ayant pour but de produire des connaissances centrées fondamentalement sur une meilleure répartition du pouvoir entre le client et le chercheur dans la relation de recherche, et ce tout au long du processus de recherche.Conséquences pour la pratique. La méthodologie du handicap proposée tente de faire correspondre la recherche en ergothérapie à la philosophie centrée sur le client qui sous-tend la pratique de l'ergothérapie et aspire à promouvoir une participation significative des clients à la recherche en tant qu'occupation.

Background. Occupational therapists' stated commitments to client-centred practice and to enabling participation in the occupations of daily life are not universally reflected in either the practice or the occupation of occupational therapy research. Nor have the profession's researchers generally engaged with those critiques of their endeavours that have been articulated by disability theorists. Purpose. Because no guidelines exist for the client-centred practice of occupational therapy research this paper draws from the work of disability theorists to sketch a disability methodology: a specific philosophical, political and ethical approach to developing knowledge that is fundamentally concerned with realigning power within the research relationship and throughout the research process. Practice implications. The proposed disability methodology attempts to align the practice of occupational therapy research with the client-centred philosophy underpinning occupational therapy practice and aspires to enable clients' meaningful participation in the occupation of research.
