PURPOSE: To study the interchangeability of various devices for measuring anterior chamber depth (ACD) distance.
SETTING: Optics Department. University of Valencia (Spain).
METHODS: Thirty right eyes of thirty patients aged from 20 to 40 years with a spherical equivalent ranging from −3.75 to +0.75 diopters were included in this study. The ACD distance of each eye was measured using the following devices: Orbscan II, Pentacam HR and IOLMaster 500.
RESULTS: Mean ACD measured with Orbscan II, Pentacam HR and IOLMaster was 2.66 ± 0.25 mm, 2.87 ± 0.28 mm and 2.70 ± 0.21 mm, respectively. The comparative data analysis revealed that Pentacam HR measured significantly greater ACD (p < 0.01) than the other two devices, whereas IOLMaster 500 and Orbscan II yielded comparable ACD values (p > 0.01).
CONCLUSION: Pentacam HR, Orbscan II and IOLMaster 500 may be used interchangeably when determining ACD to calculate IOL power, whereas they cannot be considered as interchangeable for determining IOL safety.
