Una lectura detenida del interesante diálogo presentado en Viaje de Turquía ilumina nuestra comprensión de la dinámica vida de las costas y aguas del Mediterráneo de la temprana modernidad; al mismo tiempo que nos ayuda a reflexionar sobre problemas universales y actuales como la convivencia multicultural, malentendidos culturales y lingüísticos, y la formación de los estados modernos. El objetivo principal de este artículo es iluminar, a través de una lectura detenida, los pasajes en los que este texto se disloca en ambigüedades y áreas grises entre, por un lado el respeto por las convenciones artísticas dominantes y el discurso oficial, y, por el otro, la presentación distópica de la España de Felipe II y la fascinación por el otro islámico.

A careful reading of the interesting dialogue presented in Viaje de Turquía illuminates our understanding of the dynamic life of the sixteenth-century Mediterranean Sea and its coasts; at the same time it helps us to reflect on current issues such as multicultural coexistence, cultural and linguistic misunderstandings, and the emergence of modern states. The main objective of this article is to shed light, through a close reading, on the parts of the book where it dislocates into ambiguities, and on the grey areas between, on one hand, respect for the dominant artistic conventions and official discourse; and on the other, the dystopic representation of Phillip II of Spain and the fascination with the Islamic Other.
