    The year 1917 imprints a decisive turning point in the history of the movies and of its cultural recognition. In that year of war and revolution, when America, then first cinematographic power in the world, is preparing to join in the conflict, movie theatres attract a wider and wider audience, and the movies, notably American, Charlie Chaplin’s or Cecil B. DeMille’s, win the interest and admiration of intellectuals and artists who perceive in their mute, universal language the promise of a novel art that unanimously moves the masses.

    L’année 1917 marque un tournant décisif dans l’histoire du cinéma et de sa reconnaissance culturelle. En cette année de guerre et de révolution, alors que l’Amérique, devenue première puissance cinématographique mondiale, s’apprête à entrer dans le conflit, les salles de cinéma attirent un public de plus en plus nombreux et large et les films, notamment américains, ceux de Charlie Chaplin ou Cecil B. De Mille, rallient l’intérêt et l’admiration d’intellectuels et artistes, qui voient dans leur langage muet et universel la promesse d’un art nouveau qui touche l’unanimité des foules.
