    The context of the war haunts the whole of the theatrical production in the year 1917, from its leading works, Parade, Les Mamelles de Tirésias and the Dadaist evenings, to those of the plays written or published that year. Envisaged in the prospect of the effects of the war on forms, the works show two symmetric difficulties : those nourished by an ambition to tell the war fail to represent its complexity in spite of their inventiveness, when others display formal contradictions that appear singularly modern, as a result of the compromise with the forces exerted upon them by the context.

    Le contexte de la guerre hante toute la production théâtrale de l’année 1917, de ses oeuvres phares, Parade, Les Mamelles de Tirésias et les soirées dadaïstes, à celles du théâtre de texte écrites ou publiées cette année-là. Envisagées dans la perspective des effets de la guerre sur les formes, les oeuvres témoignent de deux difficultés symétriques : celles portées par une ambition de dire la guerre échouent, en dépit de leur inventivité, à en figurer la complexité quand d’autres manifestent des contradictions formelles singulièrement modernes, résultant du compromis avec les forces exercées sur elles par le contexte.
