Du nouveau dans la « surprise » ? Une notion conventionnelle devenue emblématique de l’année 1917

    At the end of 1917 Apollinaire places the « new spirit » under the trite notion of « surprise ». He seeks to federate a group of poets close to the Cubists which is gaining ascendancy over the literary scene that year. Reactions are immediate, from the partners (Cocteau, Cendrars, Jacob, Reverdy) as well as from the opponents. « Surprise » becomes then the term taken over by the different actors of the poetic network, in cooperation or rivalry. This study shows how a notion endowed with a weak aesthetic interest suddenly becomes emblematic of the strongest poetic innovations in a pivotal year.

    Fin 1917, Apollinaire place l’« esprit nouveau » sous la notion banale de la « surprise ». Il cherche à fédérer un groupe de poètes proches des cubistes, qui prend l’ascendant sur la scène littéraire cette année-là. Les réactions sont immédiates, tant chez les complices (Cocteau, Cendrars, Jacob, Reverdy) que chez les adversaires (Tzara, Vaché, Breton). La « surprise » devient alors le terme que les différents acteurs du réseau poétique s’approprient, dans la coopération ou la rivalité. Cette étude montre comment une notion au faible intérêt esthétique devient subitement emblématique des plus fortes innovations poétiques d’une année charnière.
