    Juan Gelman passed through a deep personal crisis during the years 1962-1968, and Cólera buey is the chronicle of his chaotic search for a new poetic language to help him through it. Critics have emphasized the many formal innovations in the book. Just as important, however, is the evolving point of view of the poetic speaker, and the change in the perception of his identity. Another is the poet's questioning the appropriateness of lyric poetry to convey the increasing complexity of the world around him. The poet's disillusion with the Communist Party and with the direction the government of his country is taking are reflected in the focus and in the style of the poems. They lack the necessary clarity to promote the revolutionary message of previous books, and the focus moves from trying to change the world to a painful examination of the self. This is a process carried out gradually and with reticence. The two books studied, ‘El amante mundial’ and ‘Cólera buey’ seem like the concentric layers of an onion, always in the direction of a descent into the depths of ‘los infiernos del yo’

    Desde su primer poemario, Gelman se compromete a denunciar la injusticia para fundar un mundo mejor a través de la poesía. Su desilusión con la situación por la que atraviesa Argentina, y los problemas familiares son la causa de un estado de confusión y crisis, que trata de superar por medio de la palabra poética. Cólera buey (1971) es el resultado de esta búsqueda, caótica y multidimensional, para reen-contrarse y definir una nueva manera de relacionarse con el mundo. La crítica ha notado la intensa experimentación con el lenguaje, designando a Cólera buey como un ‘laboratorio de escritura’. El aporte de este ensayo es destacar el desarrollo de estrategias retóricas que también tienen lugar, tales como el cambio de perspectiva del hablante poético y su constante cuestionar a la lírica como el medio adecuado para reflejar la realidad en toda su complejidad. El foco de los poemas cambia, de la revolución al autoexamen, y el estilo se hace hermético y personal. Los dos primeros libros, ‘El amante mundial’ y ‘Cólera buey’, homónimo del conjunto de nueve libros, constituyen el camino de ida en este viaje poético a los infiernos del yo.
