    La actual situación en Europa y el mundo occidental es en cierta medida un reflejo del conflicto latente entre el auge de los discursos de odio y la libertad de expresión. Fenómenos como la globalización y el aumento de la inmigración hacia Europa han generado una oleada de rechazo y ansiedad ante una realidad cambiante, sobre todo a causa de agravantes como la crisis de los refugiados y el terrorismo. Esta tendencia pone de manifiesto el debate acerca de los límites de la libertad de expresión en el continente, no en vano este derecho representa uno de los pilares fundamentales de las democracias europeas. Así pues, este artículo analiza el estado del debate en el seno de las instituciones regionales, a través de varias sentencias del Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos, con el fin de ilustrar el presente tira y afloja entre la libertad de expresión y la limitación del discurso de odio.

    The current situation in Europe and the Western world is to some extent a reflection of the latent conflict between the rise of hate speech and freedom of expression. Phenomena such as globalization and the increase of immigration to Europe have generated a wave of rejection and anxiety towards a changing reality, mainly due to aggravating factors such as the refugee crisis and terrorism. This trend highlights the debate about the limits of freedom of expression on the continent, a right that represents one of the most fundamental pillars of European democracies. In this way, this article analyses the state of the debate within the regional institutions, through a series of judgments from the European Court of Human Rights, to illustrate the current tug of war between freedom of expression and the limitation of hate speech.
