    El artículo estudia la conferencia titulada “Spain”, pronunciada por Gabriela Cunninghame Graham en Newcastle upon Tyne en marzo de 1890. Tras una breve introducción sobre la autora, se aborda el análisis del texto teniendo en cuenta el público al que iba dirigida la conferencia y los rasgos estereotipados del “carácter nacional” español contra los que lucha la escritora. Su pensamiento antiutilitarista enfrenta las modernas formas de vida a las antiguas que todavía se conservan en España. Esta imagen provoca una imagen melancólica del país.

    The paper studies the lecture entitled “Spain”, pronounced by Gabriela Cunninghame Graham in Newcastle upon Tyne in March 1890. After a brief introduction about the author, the paper analyses the text taking into account the public it was addressed and the stereotypical traits of the Spanish “national character”. Gabriella fights against the same traits during her lecture. Her anti-utilitarian thought achieves bringing face to face the modern forms of life with the ancient forms that are still preserved in Spain. This image provokes a melancholy picture of the country.
