    El estudio presente describe el trascendental papel que desempeñaron las legiones romanas en la conquista, pacificación y anexión al Imperio romano de nuevos territorios. Esta actividad resultó ser un magnífico recurso para romanizar esos lugares. Para dar una amplia visión de la institución militar, de profunda tradición, se hace un recorrido sobre el origen, evolución y sentido del ejército romano, la justificación de la existencia de un “ius militaris”, la figura del legionario, su papel en la construcción de obras castrenses y públicas, urbanismo militar y, por último, se realiza una breve exposición sobre los tipos de ejército que existieron en Roma.

    The present study describes the important role of the Roman legions in the conquest, pacification and annexation of new territories to the Roman Empire. Said approaches proved to be a great tool to romanise these places. In order to give a broad vision over the military institution having a deep-rooted tradition an overview is made on the origin, evolution and purpose of the Roman army, the justification for the existence of a "ius militaris", the figure of the legionary, their role in the construction of military and public works, military urbanism and finally a brief exposition is made on the types of army existing in Rome.
