  Three main topics will be discussed in this article: First, the two central aspects associated with the concept of (religious) tolerance, giving emphasis to their difference and, also, their mutual dependence; secondly, the historical advancement of these concepts in the institutional development of the West, paying attention to the fact that we have in this process both a waning mentality of persecution and, on the other hand, a strengthening in the political powers that moderate the pacts of tolerance;  finally, we will read the current situation related to religious intolerance and persecution based on some of the precepts of mimetic theory

  Três tópicos centrais serão discutidos neste artigo: primeiro, dois dos principais entendimentos associados ao conceito de tolerância religiosa, em que se sublinhará a diferença entre eles como, também, sua mútua dependência; segundo, o avanço histórico desses conceitos no desenvolvimento institucional do Ocidente, percebendo que houve, ao mesmo tempo, um arrefecimento relativo da mentalidade persecutória e, por outro lado, um recrudescimento no arbítrio das forças que moderam os pactos de tolerância; finalmente, faremos uma leitura das perseguições religiosas e antirreligiosas atuais, com base em alguns pressupostos da teoria mimética
