This paper aims to examine the difference between defining Basque culture in itself, and the development of definitions based on Basque culture. In other words, it explores the difference between being the object of criticism and being a critical subject. Three main ideas are developed. Firstly, "euskal gizartea" (Basque society) and "euskal herria" (the Basque people ; understood as the people that consider themselves Basques, in the same way the Spanish, French, Scottish people consider themselves Spanish, French or Scoths) are not the same thing, and it is important to distinguish between them when distributing rights and obligations in relation to language normalisation. Secondly, in contrast to the belief that identity transcends language, it is important to understand that identity and language in fact shape each other. And thirdly, we hold that "euskal kultura" (Basque culture) is not a part of "cultura vasca/culture basque", just as speaking Basque is not a part of speaking Spanish or French

Artikulu honen muina euskal kultura definitzearen eta definizioak euskal kulturatik burutzearen arteko aldea da. Edo, bestela esanda, kritika objektu izatearen eta subjektu kritiko izatearen artekoa. Ildoan, hiru ideiaren jorratzen dira. Hasteko, euskal gizartea eta euskal herria (sic) ez direla gauza bera, eta komeni dela bereizketa hori egitea hizkuntzen normalizazioari begira eskubide eta betebeharrak banatzeko.
