  La subregión saheliana conecta con los espacios sociopolíticos del Magreb por el norte y con el África subsahariana por el sur. Los primeros aún se encuentran bajo los efectos desestabilizadores de las revoluciones árabes y la segunda se perfila como la reserva energética mundial para el siglo XXI. Debido a ello, el Sahel adquiere una creciente centralidad en todos los aspectos. Magreb y Sahel Occidental, analizados como unidad geopolítica, constituyen un espacio prioritario de actuación para la Unión Europea. Sin embargo, los Estados miembros aún se resisten a dotar de músculo a su PCSD (política común de seguridad y defensa), lo que resta credibilidad a la Unión como actor global.

  La crisis maliense constituye un ejemplo «de manual» representativo del nuevo tipo de conflicto armado intraestatal e internacionalizado característico del escenario Posguerra Fría. Nos servirá para profundizar en el estudio de las causas que subyacen en este tipo de conflictos. Por otra parte, el escenario ofrece a la Unión una ventana de oportunidad para afirmar su posición en el volátil escenario internacional del primer cuarto del siglo XXI.

  The Sahel connects to the north with the socio-political spaces of the Maghreb and with Black Africa to the south. The former, are still under the destabilizing effects of the Arabrevolutions and the second, is emerging as the world energy reserve for the twenty-first century. Because of this, the Sahelian region acquires a growing centrality in all aspects.

  Maghreb and Western Sahel, analyzed as a geopolitical unit, constitute a priority area of action for the European Union. However, Member States still refuse to endow with muscle to their CSDP (Common Security and Defense Policy), which undermines the credibility of the Union as a global actor. The Malian crisis is a textbook case of the new type of intrastate and internationalized armed conflict distinctive of the Post-Cold War era.

  Therefore, it serves as a reference to study the underlying causes of this kind of conflict.

  On the other hand, the scenario offers a window of opportunity for the Union to reinforce its positions in the volatile international scene of the first quarter of the 21st century.
