El motivo de las Hojas secas presenta en la literatura occidental un doble sentido, metapoético y afectivo-existencial. El propósito del presente artículo es realizar un recorrido ilustrativo, analítico e interpretativo por las diversas variantes y fórmulas lingüísticas que ha adoptado este recurso, desde su aparición hasta su auge en el Romanticismo y Posromanticismo. En su sentido afectivo-existencial, su núcleo semántico expresa el término de una relación amorosa y se materializa, sobre todo, en poemas narrativos. Este estudio comienza indagando en los orígenes de este motivo en la Ilíada (Homero) y en el Arte poética. Epístola a los Pisones (Horacio), para finalizar analizando sus principales modulaciones y variantes semánticas en el Romanticismo y Posromanticismo.

The motif of falling leaves in western literature offers a double sense, one metapoetic and another one affective and existential. The aim of this paper is to present an illustrative, analytic and interpretative journey through the different variations and linguistic formulas of this device, from its appearance to the moment it reached its peak in the Romantic and Post-Romantic periods. In an affective and existential sense, its semantic core expresses the end of a love affair and is found mainly in narrative poems. This study begins by enquiring into the origins of this motif in the Iliad (Homer) and in the The Art of Poetry. Epistle to the Pisones (Horace), to continue analyzing its main modulations and semantic variations in Romanticism and Post-Romanticism.
