    El cimarronaje se ha considerado como máxima expresión de resistencia agenciada por africanos y sus descendientes en el Caribe. Este énfasis ha impedido ver otras estrategias contra-hegemónicas puestas en práctica por los individuos diaspóricos, tales como la lucha legal de negros libres. Sostenemos que la adquisición colectiva y legal de libertad fue otra poderosa y creativa estrategia de sortear el sometimiento esclavista y agenciar autonomía. Nuestro objetivo es visibilizar esta estrategia comparando dos casos de pueblos de negros libres en el Caribe continental e insular: Curiepe, en Venezuela, y San Mateo de Cangrejos, en Puerto Rico.

    Marronage has been considered as the most genuine representation of resistance of Africans and their descendants in the Caribbean. Th is emphasis has avoided to overlook other counter-hegemonic strategies, such as the legal struggle of free blacks. We argue that the collective and legal acquisition of freedom achieved by African descendant people was a powerful and creative strategy to overcome slave subjugation and to promote autonomy. Our objective is to make this strategy visible through the comparison of two case studies of free black towns in the continental and insular Caribbean: Curiepe, Venezuela and San Mateo de Cangrejos, Puerto Rico.
