  This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the outbreak of the Great War in the Arab-Ottoman world, by analyzing the ways it was perceived in the city of Alexandria. Perceptions are reconstructed through a study of Alexandrian Arabic literary sources of the time. An approach through the city enables abandoning the anachronistic framework of the nation and giving the imperial horizon the relevance it deserves. This also helps to rethink the chronology. In fact, the weakening of the Ottoman Empire was seen with anxiety, not only since 1914, but after the Italian invasion of Tripoli in 1911. This colonial occupation of an Ottoman province seems to be the real turning point. The ineffectiveness of intra-Ottoman solidarity, in an Egyptian province which was also under foreign occupation, led to a brutal disillusionment.   Pour contribuer à affiner la compréhension de l’entrée en guerre dans le monde arabo-ottoman, cet article propose une analyse des manières dont celle-ci a été perçue dans la ville d’Alexandrie. Elles sont saisies à travers les sources littéraires arabes alexandrines de l’époque. Une approche par la ville permet de s’émanciper du cadre anachronique de la nation, en redonnant sa place à l’horizon impérial. Cela aide, en même temps, à repenser la chronologie. En effet, l’affaiblissement de l’Empire ottoman est vécu avec angoisse, non pas à partir de 1914, mais après l’invasion italienne de la Tripolitaine de 1911. Cette occupation coloniale d’une province ottomane semble être le véritable tournant. Face à l’inefficacité de faire appel à une solidarité intra-ottomane, dans une province égyptienne qui est elle aussi sous occupation étrangère, la désillusion est brutale. Ce n’est pas seulement l’horizon impérial, mais l’ordre mondial qui perd son sens, en engendrant déjà un sentiment d’entrée en guerre.
