El mundo clásico de griegos y latinos está presente en numerosos escritos de José Ortega y Gasset. No sólo es la alusión erudita de los grandes filósofos, ni el pasajero recuerdo de uno de sus mitos. Un análisis de su obra escrita revela que Ortega y Gasset conocía bien la historia, pensamiento, arte, religión, mitología, literatura, lengua, política, sociedad, economía y costumbres de esos dos pueblos que pusieron los cimientos de la cultura occidental. En las páginas siguientes se ofrece una selección de pasajes a modo de ejemplos, en los que célebres filósofos griegos y grandes personajes romanos son citados por Ortega. Unos y otros dejaron su huella en la formación, pensamiento y obra del pensador madrileño. En nota se recogen otros trabajos donde el autor ha publicado otros estudios relacionados con la presencia del mundo clásico en José Ortega y Gasset.

The Greek and Latin Classical World is mentioned in a great number of Ortega y Gasset'sworks and not only by means of the erudite quotations of great philosophers or the passing reference to one of their myths. The study of Ortega y Gasset's Works shows that he knew a great deal about the history, philosophy, art, religion, mythology, literature, language, politics, society, economics and mores of these two nations which laid the foundations for western culture. This paper offers an illustrative selection of passages in which famous Greek philosophers and Roman celebrities are mentioned by Ortega. All of them influenced his education, thought and work. Other studies where the author of this paper has analysed the reference and influence of the Classical World in Ortega y Gasset are included in the footnotes.
