    The Francoprovençal dialects spoken in the Swiss canton of Valais present a rather unusual system of 3rd person singular subject clitics in comparison with other Romance languages. Like French, Rumantsch and certain northern Occitan, Gallo-Italian and Tuscan dialects, they developed a subject clitic – which remained optional in the dialects studied here – but abandoned the opposition between masculine and feminine inherited from the Latin demonstratives from which they stem. In parallel, they developed, in part at least, new morphological distinctions: the subject clitic has different forms before verbs beginning with a vowel or a consonant. Material from the ALAVAL (Audio-visual Linguistic Atlas of Francoprovençal spoken in Valais) allows us to study and – we hope – to understand the evolution through the synchrony of microsystems which coexist in the geolinguistic space of Valais.

    Les parlers francoprovençaux valaisans présentent un système des clitiques sujets de la 3e personne du singulier relativement atypique au sein des langues romanes. Comme le français, le romanche et certains parlers nord-occitans, gallo-italiens et toscans, ils ont développé un clitique sujet – celui-ci est resté d’emploi facultatif dans les parlers étudiés ici –, mais ont abandonné l’opposition entre le masculin et le féminin héritée des démonstratifs latins dont les formes actuelles sont issues. Parallèlement, ils ont développé, en partie du moins, de nouvelles distinctions morphologiques: la forme du clitique sujet est différente devant verbe à initiale vocalique ou consonantique. Les matériaux de l’Atlas linguistique audiovisuel du francoprovençal valaisan ALAVAL permettent d’étudier et – on l’espère du moins – de comprendre le déroulement de ces évolutions grâce à la synchronie des microsystèmes qui coexistent dans l’espace géolinguistique valaisan.
