Resumen de RHI posts stable Q1 2015 results despite dip in FM demand

Liz Gyekye, Laura Syrett

  • "We consume our fused magnesia (FM) in our own bricks," Thomas Drnek, plant manager for RHI's Breiteneau facility told IM, when discussing the company's first quarter performance at the IM MagMin 2015 conference in Athens, Greece. "Most of our raw materials we consume ourselves," he said.

"It is clear that the emissions trading system in the EU must be reformed," Drnek said. "The new targets for 2030 proposed by the EU include a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases, but these have not been sufficiently thought out, and would lead to a significant loss of value creation and a tremendous number of job losses under the current emissions trading system." Drnek said that the European magnesia industry may be forced to adopt a policy of "carbon leakage", which would see the transfer of production to other regions with softer limits on carbon emissions. "It is easy to see why this makes sense," he said.
