  • Resumen
    • This paper discusses the controversy surrounding the new methodological approach advanced by the Dictionnaire Etymologique Roman, which has posed a radical, tantalizing challenge to Romance etymological research. The project recently edited by Buchi and Schweickard overturns most basic and – since Meyer-Lübke – long-held assumptions about the reconstruction of Proto-Romance, and makes a powerful point for restoring both the phonological shape and the semantic load and evolution of the lexical units recovered from the ancestor's language. Two main, controversial contentions of the new stance adopted by the DÉRom concern a reconstruction solely accomplished through a systematic comparison of the forms descending from the Proto-language, and a comparison limited to the major Romance languages. The paper aims at reconciling the few criticisms levelled at this new approach with the points of view held by its contenders, showing the benefits descending from a thorough formal and semantic reconstruction, but also the indisputable need to resort to Latin written attestations and minor Romance evidence to fully meet the requirements of a refined etymological method.
