La Apoteosis de Abascal: el primer grito de Independencia de Quito en un lienzo del Museo de América de Madrid

    La reciente adquisición del cuadro titulado Vista de la Entrada en la ciudad de Quito de las tropas remitidas por el Virrey del Perú, para el Museo de América de Madrid, nos ha permitido realizar una extensa investigación para documentar la obra de arte. Al analizar la imagen con detalle, vemos la posición del virrey del Perú sobre el llamado «Primer Grito de la Independencia quiteña», el motivo del encargo del cuadro y el envío posterior al XIII duque del Infantado, los intereses ocultos detrás de la imagen, y la gran singularidad del cuadro. Finalmente se propone una posible autoría de la obra por el pintor ecuatoriano-peruano Francisco Xavier Cortés.

    The recent acquisition by the Museum of America in Madrid of the painting entitled View of the Entry into the City of Quito of Troops sent by the Viceroy of Peru, led us to carry out extensive research to document the work. Analyzing the image in detail, we can ascertain the Viceroy´s position on the so-called First Cry of Independence of Quito, and the reason he commissioned the painting and later sent it to the 13th Duke of the Infantado. We can also better understand the hidden interests behind the image and its uniqueness. We conclude that the painting could be the work of the Ecuadorian-Peruvian painter Francisco Xavier Cortés.
