    This paper accounts for a reversal of traditional spaces in the eighteenth-century French playhouse: a fluctuation of the performance area and the areas where spectators are located, facilitated by architecture and decoration, which spectators exploit for their own purposes of social representation. In addition to iconographic documents, witness accounts and press coverage are brought to bear in order to analyze the interplay of various kinds of gazing in an environment that is both unusual and mundane

    Cet article observe le renversement entre la salle et la scène à l’aune de l’architecture et de la décoration afin de souligner comment ces éléments sont utilisés par les spectateurs à des fins de représentation sociale au 18e siècle. Outre la documentation iconographique, cette étude recourt aux témoignages et à la presse afin de mettre en lumière les jeux de regards inhérents à un environnement exceptionnel – la salle de spectacle – et néanmoins quotidien et régulier
