El presente trabajo pretende indagar en los modos de construcción textual de la figura del criminal que aparece en el cuento Los crímenes de la calle Morgue, de Edgar Allan Poe. Para ello proponemos una lectura interpretativa que desarticula la escisión tajante entre civilización y barbarie al poner en conflicto el concepto-base de racionalidad que funciona como línea demarcatoria entre ambos planos. Asumiendo esta perspectiva resulta factible considerar que estamos frente a la construcción de una imagen especular, según la cual el sujeto que indirectamente viene a reflejar la idea abstracta del criminal, exhibe a la vez los rasgos de un chivo expiatorio al cargar con una culpa colectiva que hace metástasis en todo el cuerpo social

The following article intends to inquire into certain aspects related with an inverted image that appears in the short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue, by Edgar Allan Poe, built around the criminal character with the purpose of studying its constitution and implications, postulating an interpretation that dismantles the cleavage between civilization and barbarism by questioning the basic concept of rationality that works as a dividing line among both spheres.
From that perspective it is possible to consider that, in the story, the person who incarnates the abstract idea of the criminal exhibits the characteristics of a scapegoat carrying a collective guilt that spreads as a metastasis in all society.
