  Al sur de la localidad de Prahuaniyeu, sector oeste de la Meseta de Somuncurá, afloran rocas volcánicas alcalinas a ultra-alcalinas (basanitas). Las mismas presentan fenocristales de olivino en una pasta con augita titanífera, olivino, nefelina y minerales opacos. Geoquímicamente están levemente enriquecidas respecto al patrón de OIB, poseen una marcada anomalía negativa en K y altos valores de elementos incompatibles. Estas características son comparables con las volcanitas plio-pleistocenas de la región.

  Petrography and geochemistry of basanites from the western part of Meseta de Somuncurá, Río Negro province. South of Prahuaniyeu, in the western part of Meseta de Somuncurá, alkali to ultra-alkali volcanic rocks (basanites) crop out. These lavas have olivine fenocrystals in a groundmass of titaniferous augite, olivine, nepheline and opaque minerals. They are slightly enriched compared with OIB standards, have a strong negative K anomaly and high contents of incompatible elements. These geochemical characteristics are comparable with the Plio-Pleistocene volcanic rocks of the region.
