Objective: Identify the relationship between knowledge, habits and community participation, against transmission of dengue and chikungunya in the neighborhood communityEl Dorado I and II of the city of Pereira for the period 2015-02. Materials andmethods: A study was developed with quantitative descriptive transversal approach in240 randomly selected households, with a standard error of 5% and a confidence intervalof 95%. knowledge about dengue and chikungunya, community participation, thenumber of farms identified, number of positive, negative hatcheries and calculatingthe Aedes index were analyzed in homes. As a method to estimate the relationship betweenqualitative variables contingency tables and calculate the odds ratio were used- OR bivariate; analyzes were performed using the software EPI INFO version 7. Results:A significant number of breeding places of Aedes aegypti identified, constitutinga 17% Aedes index catalogándose as high risk. Have knowledge of what is dengue [OR1,60 95% CI 0,71 – 3,56] is not a protective factor in the presence of mosquito breedingsites. In the case of knowledge of chikungunya [OR 1,00 95% CI 0,46 – 2,18] was unrelatedto the presence of them was found. As for knowledge about dengue transmissionroutes [OR 0,40 95% CI 0,12 -1,38] and chikungunya [OR 1,50 95% CI 0,32 – 6,90] onlyknow about dengue transmission, it proved to be a protective factor against the event. With regard to participation in workshops collection of useless [OR 0,72 95% CI 0,41 –1,60] were shown to be a protective factor in the presence of the vector, the oppositeoccurred when people had participated in talks on dengue prevention and chikungunya.[OR 1,40 95% CI 0,68 – 2,62]. Conclusions: Having knowledge about dengue is notconsidered as a protective factor in the presence of the vector, greater knowledgeabout dengue was evident that on chikungunya. A high Aedes index, with a potentialrisk factor for the presence of the vector, it was identified that the active communityparticipation impacts positively on the absence of mosquito breeding sites was found.
