    El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el emplazamiento o locus de la autoridad religiosa, el cual ha cambiado llevando a un aumento del número de voces musulmanas que reclaman su espacio de participación crítica o intelectual y, con ello, a cierta rivalidad por la autoridad religiosa y social. Si bien quienes han competido por la autoridad religiosa han sido sobre todo hombres, las mujeres –contrariamente a la opinión preponderante– no han estado del todo excluidas. Por tanto, podemos afirmar que las mujeres, aunque solo hasta cierto punto, también participan en esta competición por la autoridad. En definitiva, cada vez son más los nuevos líderes sociales, políticos y religiosos musulmanes que propugnan una serie de causas con el fin de satisfacer la sofisticada demanda de la comunidad musulmana individualizada.

    Beginning with a review of historical developments such as the Treaty of WadRas (1860) and the Spanish protectorate in Morocco (1912-1956), this article analyses the process of organising and institutionalising Muslim individuals and communities in Spain between 1900 and 1992. In order to do this, it examines the organisational hallmarks of the Muslim communities in North Africa (Ceuta and Melilla); underlines the role of education in the process of making these communities visible during the protectorate and the Franco dictatorship; and analyses the religious visibility achieved through the register of associations and the creation of Spanish Muslim associations. All this culminated in the signing of the Cooperation Agreement in 1992 between the State and the Muslim community. Although a historical continuum cannot be established, it is concluded that this contact has modified certain institutional and social parameters, provided community organisation structures and left physical evidence (mosques and cemeteries).
