    This text, whose author is anonymous, examines a Brazilian grammar book from the 19th century, “Brazilian Grammar or the Art of Speaking”, according to rules set by Manuel Borges Carneiro. The aims of the research are the following: i) establish if Brazilian Portuguese is the subject of analysis of the works; ii) look for clues that can lead to identifying its likely author. The search for the response to the issue investigated in this research is underpinned by the History of Linguistic Ideas, such as grammatisation and the horizont de retrospection (Auroux 1992, 2006, 2007), through which we shall establish whether Luís Maria da Silva Pinto, author of the “Brazilian Portuguese Language Dictionary” (1832), is also the author of this grammar book, which confines itself to speaking of the origin of the works and does not contain any linguistic data characteristic of Brazilian Portuguese.

    O foco deste texto é o exame de uma gramática brasileira do século XIX, Grammatica brasileira ou arte de falar, conforme as regras de Manuel Borges Carneiro, de autor anônimo. Os objetivos da pesquisa são: i) verificar se a variedade brasileira da língua portuguesa é objeto de análise na obra; ii) investigar pistas que levem a seu provável autor. A busca pela resposta ao problema desta pesquisa funda-se em princípios da História das ideias linguísticas, tais como gramatização e horizonte de retrospecção (Auroux 1992, 2006, 2007), pelos quais verificaremos se Luís Maria da Silva Pinto, autor do Dicionário da língua brasileira (1832), é também o autor dessa gramática, cuja denominação refere o local de origem da obra, mas ela, em si, não traz dados linguísticos que caracterizam o português do Brasil.
