  This study of Víctor Balaguer’s book Historia de Cataluña addresses the fourteen chapters of the work that focus on the progress of civilisation, in which Balaguer sketches out a history of Catalan literature within the broader history of culture. These chapters and Balaguer’s vision of literaturehave largely gone unnoticed by historians, even though some of the writers of the Bourbon Restoration attested that their reading of the work enabled their generation to understand and better appreciate the country, the culture and the literature. The study’s aim is to analyse a portion of the book, which makes sense on its own within its context; to indicate its sources and its links to the tradition of literary history, and point out the new proposals that it puts forward within the European panorama. This will enable us to gauge the work’s value appropriately and assert that it deserves to feature in its own right in any future history of the histories of Catalan literature

  El treball «La Historia de Cataluña de Víctor Balaguer. Un panorama literari» tracta dels catorze capítols d’aquesta obra dedicats als «Progresos de la civilización», on es dibuixa la història de la literatura catalana dins la corresponent història de la cultura. Uns capítols i una visió de laliteratura que han passat molt desapercebuts pels historiadors, encara quealguns dels escriptors de la Restauració van deixar escrit que la seva lectura va ajudar els de la seva generació a conèixer i estimar més el país, la culturai la literatura. L’objectiu ha estat analitzar aquesta part de l’obra, que té sentit per ella mateixa, dins el seu context, assenyalar-ne les fonts i els vincles amb la tradició de la historiografia literària i les propostes innovadores que, dins el panorama europeu, ofereix. Tot plegat ens permet de valorar-la adequadament i dir que mereixeria figurar amb tota la seva entitat en una hipotètica futura història de les històries de la literatura catalana
