  Agermanar poesia i història és una pretensió del Víctor Balaguerhistoriador i del Víctor Balaguer narrador. Això no vol dir que no faci distincions entre fabulació i report de fets històrics, com una certa historiografia i una certa crítica antiromàntiques ens fan creure. Un recorregut per la seva producció narrativa de la primera època (dels anys quaranta a finals dels seixanta) permet fer algunes precisions sobre allò que entén com a poetització de la Història. Es postul·la en aquest article, sobre assercions del mateix autor, que Balaguer és un escriptor d’exclusiva mentalitat històrica, abocat a destriar allò que és poètic en els episodis del passat i poc propens a confiar, quan se li retreuen dèficits de veracitat històrica, en les armes de la fabulació lliure, d’altra banda usada per bastir un mite poderós com el de Joan de Serrallonga

  Blending history and poetry is one of the aims of Víctor Balaguer both as a historian and as a narrator. This is not to argue that Balaguer fails to draw distinctions between the invention and the reporting of historical facts, as a certain anti-Romantic historiography and criticism would lead us to believe. An exploration of Balaguer’s early narrative output (from the eighteen-forties to sixties) raises a number of points that clarify what he understands to be the poeticisation of History. Over the assertions of Balaguer himself, this paper argues that he is a writer with an exclusively historical way of thinking, bent on disentangling poetic elements from the events of the past and not inclined, though he was reproached for his lack of historical veracity, to trust in the weapons of free invention, which he nonetheless employed to erect powerful myths, like that of Joan de Serrallonga
